The Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) has named Westminster the Large Community of the Year, for accomplishments in 2018.
Criteria for this award includes: strong economic development vision and execution; planning and investment in long-term development of community such as infrastructure, permanent financing of economic development, or targeted strategies to secure primary jobs.
Westminster earned this title for its business development accomplishments, including its attraction, retention and expansion efforts with large companies like Maxar Technologies, Trimble, Inc., and Ball Corporation. Additionally, more than 2,300 new jobs were created in 2018, along with more than 300 new businesses.
Westminster was also recognized for its development and redevelopment work in its focus areas, including Westminster Station TOD, Downtown Westminster and Historic Westminster. Additionally, the city’s success in developing a strategic housing plan, including 139 new affordable housing units and 150+ affordable housing units preserved in 2018, were considerations for this achievement.
Past winners of the Large Community award include Denver, Fort Collins, Aurora and Colorado Springs. The EDCC was established in 1976 and promotes effective, responsible economic development practices across Colorado.
